Father's Day

Sonora Louise Smart Dodd is credited with originating the idea of honoring fathers in 1909. After listening to sermon on Mother’s Day, Mrs. Dodd thought it would be nice to have a day to honor her father, who had raised his family as a widower. Mrs. Dodd’s idea took hold, but it was not until 1972 that Father’s Day was finally made an official holiday.

Here are a few ideas to help you make this Father’s Day a special one.

  • Make Dad breakfast in bed Sunday morning.
  • Create a coupon book redeemable for a day of help around the house, meals, hugs and kisses, or everyone pitching in to complete one of dad’s chores.
  • Create a custom made card featuring a Father’s Day acrostic.
  • Read the 2006 Father’s Day Proclamation.
  • Write a heartfelt letter to dad. Jill Novak will walk you through the process with her Father’s Day Letter Writing Project. You can read highlights from last year's project here and here.
  • Annie’s Father’s Day Page - Annie always has lots of activities, crafts and stories to make any holiday special.
  • Read “What Makes a Dad.”
  • Games and Puzzles for Father’s Day - from A Kid’s Heart.
  • Father’s Day Page - Literature, activities, poems and prayers from Love to Learn Place.
  • Lifeway has 6 Ways to Honor Your Dad on Father’s Day.
  • Don't wait for Father's Day to honor dad. Instead make every day father's day.
  • On this Father’s Day, take time to remember to honor your heavenly Father.

May this Father’s Day be a time of remembrance and thankfulness as we honor those wonderful men and all that they do that makes us proud to call them, “Dad.” :-)
