Tips for Attending a Homeschool Convention
If you have never been to a homeschooling convention, you are in for a real treat. What could be more inspiring than simply being surrounded by hundreds, if not thousands, of other homeschoolers!
Of course, there is the practical side of conventions to consider, too. If you know what you are looking for, you might find good deals on materials. If you are trying to decide between two different publisher’s materials, you might be better able to make a decision after viewing the materials in person. If you are looking for encouragement in a particular area, you might come away with just what you need after listening to a keynote speaker. If you have always wondered who Charlotte Mason is, or if a classical education is right for your child, attending a workshop might give you the answers you seek. So how do you make the most of this valuable avenue of support?
- First find an event in your area by checking the links on our Events page.
- If possible, have a general idea of what you will be looking for before you go. This will help you avoid over-buying.
- Consult the convention schedule and decide in advance which workshops you would like to attend. Write down any questions you would like to have answered.
- Remember that God is the God of everything - even homeschool conventions! Trust the Lord with your decisions. "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:6-7)
- On the day of the convention, wear comfortable shoes.
- Bring along a tote bag or some other carry-all to help you cart away all of those purchases.
- Some veterans will suggest leaving the children at home, but homeschool convention visits can be a family affair. Mom’s not the only one who benefits from “rubbing elbows” with other homeschoolers! Older children enjoy having a say in choosing their materials. Meanwhile, Dad can provide great support, a sounding board, budget watching and two more arms to help carry things!
- Ask questions. The vendors and their representatives are there to answer your questions!
- Refuse to be overwhelmed. You don’t have to make any decisions on the day of the convention. It is enough to come away with empty arms and food for thought that will assist you in your decision making down the road.
- Be prepared to meet many wonderful families from many different walks of life who, like you, want the best for their children!
