    Why Homeschool?

“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up." - Deuteronomy 6:6-7

    Quote

"'And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.' - 2 Corinthians 12:9 I enjoy [this verse] because this verse gives me permission to feel inadequate. We are told to glory in our infirmities because it is at this time we will have the power of Christ resting upon us. More will be accomplished in your school when the Lord is directing than at any other time. It is only by the grace of God that I am able to do what I do." • One Hundred and One Devotions for Homeschool Moms by Jackie Wellwood

    • Sometimes it helps to hear from someone who has faced the same challenges you are facing. Jackie Wellwood is a mother of seven who has been homeschooling more than ten years. While writing this book she experienced some of her most difficult times, relying on the Lord to see her through. She states in the preface, "Spiritual growth is the purpose of this devotional. I wrote it for me even though I believe it will help you, too. I wanted a book for my bedside table that would minister to the unique circumstances that I face as a homeschool mom." Each devotion begins with a scripture reference, followed by the statement of an issue, and ending in a thought provoking question. A prayer and food-for-thought conclude the devotion. The warmth of these tender lessons will provide encouragement as you are gently lead to a full understanding of where to look for strength.

Seeking Support

Where do you go when you need another pair of hands, a shoulder to lean on or just a sympathetic ear? Encouragement is just a click away.

Even after prayerful consideration, methodical planning, careful purchasing and systematic scheduling there will be days when things do not go as you would have liked. There may be areas where you feel weak and incompetent. There may be times when you feel frustrated. Take heart! You are not alone!!

Our Heavenly Father. This is the very first place we should go to seek help. He already knows the nature of the problem you face. He already knows the solution. He is waiting and hoping you will turn to Him for guidance. In Philippians 4:6-7 we are told to: "Be anxious for nothing..." Don't be anxious! Don't worry. Instead of worrying we are told "...but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." Wow! What a promise! And the Lord always keeps His promises!

Family and friends. Many times we don't even consider asking for advice or support from our family or friends. If you believe that homeschooling is a lifestyle, then you already realize the large role our spouses play. They can be wonderful sounding boards. Spouses sometimes have a way of understanding the crux of a problem simply BECAUSE they are not involved in the overwhelming minutia. Also, don't assume that friends or family who are products of the public education system won't be sympathetic to your efforts. Depending on the issue involved, they may have more to offer than you would have imagined. They can certainly provide an extra pair of hands on a field trip!

  • The Amazing Grace of God
"Home schooling, like everything else in our lives, must spring from a foundation of God's grace. And strengthening our understanding and gratefulness for that grace is always His sovereign plan in whatever He calls us to – even home schooling." Debra Bell explains how she learned she couldn't do it on her own.
  • Avoiding Homeschooling Burnout
"One of the most common reasons for weariness and frustration among homeschooling parents is the weight of self-inflicted deadlines and standards. It is good, of course, to have goals in mind, but we must always ask ourselves: 'Am I seeking to do the Lord's will, or am I merely pursuing my own agenda?'" Are you trying to homeschool under your own power? Israel Wayne explains why you are likely on the road to burnout.
  • Do you lack direction?? Do you need some joy??
"Nothing else and no one else can show me anything of lasting value or lasting direction for my life or for the lives of those around me except for God. I can look in books, ask counselors, talk to friends, purchase the right curriculum, but ultimately it is God alone who will show me the path of life. Not just the path of MY life, but THE path of life itself. The reason I am here. The very reason I exist. The very place where God dwells. It’s NOT all about me; it’s all about HIM!" A great reminder from Deborah Wuehler.
  • Look up
"So if you are finding yourself being tossed here and there on your homeschool journey, if you find yourself wandering all over the road – look up!" Making it through this homeschool journey is all about focus... Reminder from Dorothy Karman.
  • Overcoming Anxiety
"I learned to find my strength in the Lord and in His Word and found that I had a choice in what I thought about--I no longer had to entertain the negative, anxious thoughts and worries that entered my mind. I began to give those thoughts up to the Lord immediately, and then fill the gap left with prayer, praise and the Word of God... What a difference it made!" Article by Tamara Eaton.
